Traveling with Lemonade Judy Endow, keynote speaker at this year’s Autism Society of America Conference, will be visiting Edmonton in August, 2009. She has kindly offered to share her knowledge with those who are interested while she is in our city. A workshop will be held on Friday, August 21, from 9 AM through 4 PM with an hour break for lunch. It will take place in the meeting room of 11728 Kingsway Avenue, Edmonton. Judy’s first book Making Lemonade: Hints for Autism's Helpers is a collection of instructive poetry based upon her life experience as a person on the autism spectrum. During the morning of the workshop she will cover the topics of how those on the spectrum take in, process and output information, sensory system differences and the literal, concrete style of thinking so prevalent among those on the spectrum. Judy will share real life stories, including her trip to New York City, which will highlight how it is not only possible, but can be fun and rewarding for “world-people” to take trips with, interact with and otherwise befriend a person on the spectrum. You will hear about Judy's sojourns with friends, family and colleagues and how together they discovered meaningful ways to turn the lemons of autism into lemonade within the context of their relationships. Traveling with Lemonade will take you to new places and give you a renewed hope for the possibilities that can be in all of our futures as we continue to learn how to live with autism in a meaningful, relevant and respectful manner. The afternoon session will focus on Outsmarting Explosive Behaviour. This presentation describes an effective way to support individuals with explosive behaviours by using a visual system of four train cars to depict the stages of explosive behaviour along with stop and go signs to show effective support strategies to use during each stage in the explosive behaviour cycle. This model has been effectively used with numerous students (Early Childhood through Adulthood), has been part of the Wisconsin DPI Basic Level Autism Training Project and has been published by AAPC in 2009 as a three part kit (teacher manual, visual system and student workbook). Judy Endow, MSW maintains a private practice in Madison, WI providing consultation for families, school districts and other agencies. Besides having autism herself, she is the parent of a son on the autism spectrum. Judy does workshops and presentations on a variety of autism related issues, is part of the Wisconsin DPI Statewide Autism Training Team and a board member of ASW. Judy is the author of a number of books, beginning with Making Lemonade, Hints for Autism's Helpers (2006 CBR Press). Outsmarting Explosive Behavior, A Visual System of Support and Intervention for Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders (2009 AAPC) and Paper Words, Discovering and Living with My Autism (2009 AAPC) are Judy's most recent books.
