Sharing our Wisdom

Edited by Gail Gillingham and Sandra McClennen

To truly understand another, we must take the time to listen their journey. This becomes even more important when those we are trying to understand are very different from us. Life stories share by people on the autism spectrum are startling in their contrast to what one hears from the media and much of the professional community. This book of 22 conference presentations accompanied by the authors' biographies and photos will give you an insiders' view of what it truly means to live on the autism spectrum.

Sharing our Wisdom is published by the National Autism Committee, a unique organization which truly attempts to listen to those we claim to advocate with and for. Founded in 1990, the Autism National Committee is the only autism advocacy organization dedicated to "Social Justice for all Citizens with Autism". Through a shared vision and a commitment to positive approaches we believe that people with autism can live meaningful lives and make important contributions to their communities and to the larger social world. Gail is member of the Board of Directors for the Autism National Committee and currently volunteers as the editor of their newsletter.

Key Benefits

  • Benefit 1: the opportunity to hear from 22 different individuals with autism in one volume instead of only one.
  • Benefit 2: the opportunity to hear directly from those who may typically be labeled "low functioning" by the professional community and discover that they are sharing the same type of experiences as those who can speak to us and may have the label "high functioning". This indicates how far off we are when we label people in this way.
  • Benefit 3: the opportunity to face the realization that your behavior and attitudes may be placing barriers in the way of full inclusion for those on spectrum which in turn will open the doors.
